Five Tips For Teen Health, Teen Fitness, And College Health

Anyone who is concerned with teen health, teen fitness and college health, need to look no farther than your local gym floor to see why there is such a problem with teen fitness today.

Students don’t know the first thing about college health or teen health, and that is drastically affecting their expanding waistline. Students who are concerned with teen fitness need to alter their workout easier in order to become more fit.

College health is tough to regulate because of the late night parties, all you can eat buffets and drastically different lifestyle. Also, college students are much less likely to be as active as they were in high school, then teen health was much easier to come by (think 3-sport athlete).

Most teens, unfortunately, know nothing about teen health and teen fitness, and it shows in gyms across the country. Teens are showing up to the gym to workout, but we will not address the issues of teen health and teen fitness until we alter their workouts.

Here are quick tips to improve teen fitness, teen health and college fitness:

1- Rest less and workout more. It’s tough for teens to lose weight while they are resting five mintues between sets. You need to get up and workout more. Do a set of jumping jacks between sets, it’ll work! That’ll help out teen health and college health.

2- Lift weights to lose weight. Teen health is terrible because they, especially females, waste their time on the treadmills and elliptical. College health would greatly improve with shorter workouts with lifting more weights, and teen fitness wouldn’t be such an issue if teens lifted.

3- When doing cardio, do it right. Long distance running or walking will not improve teem health. In fact, there have been studies done to prove that adding aerobic training to a workout showed nothing that dieting alone wouldn’t help. Do a short run (less than a minute) followed by a shorter walk. That’ll greatly help teen fitness and college health. It’ll help lose weight!

4- Don’t isolate muscles. Teen health, teen fitness and college health will not improve unless they learn to workout right. Bicep curls will not improve teen health and teen fitness. Neither will triceps kickbacks or sit ups help out college health.

5- For college health, try to stay active. Easier said than done, but college health is just as big of a concern as teen health and teen fitness. Stay active. Go to the gym more. Remember, if you were an athlete last year, and now you do nothing, your college health will deteriorate.

Teen health, teen fitness and college health are a growing concern. But staying fit during your student years can be very simple. Lift weights, rest less, and you will melt the fat away! Remember, college health isn’t all that hard.

Cosmetic Dangers - Should Young Girls Be Allowed to Wear Makeup?

Could allowing your daughter to wear makeup be increasing her breast cancer risk?

Research shows 9 out of 10 girls are wearing makeup regularly by the time they are 14. In fact, the number of girls aged 11 to 14 who use makeup every day has doubled in two years! Yet girls are most vulnerable to the chemicals in makeup - many of which are linked to breast cancer - during the years when their bodies are developing! (Environmental Working Group report, 2008)

The cosmetic industry has been increasingly targeting our daughters over the last decade, with a range of cutesy products designed for young girls. As a mother, I know that I allowed myself to be persuaded that 'kiddy makeup' was okay because it was just the same as playing dress up. I assumed that the products would be extra safe because of the age range it was marketed to, but clearly that was not the case! A look at any of the 'kiddy' cosmetics will quickly show you an alarming range of ingredients whose name you can't pronounce (which usually means chemicals). Do a bit more research and you will find that there are ingredients like phthalates which are linked to breast cancer, birth deformation, asthma and early puberty. You will also find lead, formaldehyde and other harmful ingredients.

Many of the ingredients in makeup and skin care products mimic the effect of oestrogen. This is of great concern, because it is widely accepted amongst scientists that it is the increased exposure to oestrogen in our environment that has lead to the rise in breast cancer over the last 50 years. (Breast cancer Network(NZ)report, 2006)

Strategies for protecting our daughters from the chemicals in cosmetics

1) The first thing to do is start reading labels, particularly the ingredients list. As a rule of thumb, if you can't pronounce it - don't buy it! Be suspicious: Words like "natural" or "hypoallergenic" look reassuring, but they may well be misleading.

2) Educate yourself and your daughters. There is a lot of information on the net about the chemicals in cosmetics issue. A good place to start is at SafeCosmetics.org. There is also an alarming report that is worth reading, even if it is a bit scientific, at breastcancernetwork.org.nz in an article entitled Insidious Oestrogens.

There are also places that will educate your daughter on cosmetic safety. For instance, as part of their Building Social Confidence program, one business, Grace Academy (School of Social Confidence), is arming girls with the information they need to make safe and healthy choices in cosmetics and skin care. "There are safe products available, if you know what to look for. We also teach girls about natural products they can make themselves." said Karen McIlveen, principal of Grace Academy.

3) Make your own cosmetics and skin care products! Women often assume that you have to pay a fortune for a product that is good for your skin, but that couldn't be further from the truth! You can easily make natural products in your kitchen, which are often better for your skin than anything you can buy in the shop. You can teach your daughter to make lip glosses, face masks and bubble baths in just a few minutes, knowledge that will save her a lot of money down the track! You can download recipes at Safe Cosmetics.

4) Shop in places that sell organic and natural products. Health stores often have natural cosmetics and skin care products, but again, read the labels carefully. Just because products are in a health store doesn't mean they are free of harmful chemicals.

5) Limit you and your daughter's overall exposure to hormone-disrupting chemicals. While our bodies have an inherent ability to get rid of excess oestrogen, many of the man-made compounds can't be broken down and end up accumulating in the body.

One way to reduce the load on our bodies is to use glass containers as much as possible, as plastic containers often have these harmful chemicals. Another way to reduce exposure is to avoid all shop-bought cosmetic and skin care products, including shampoos and deodorants. In fact, some of the worst offenders are sunscreens, with five out of the 6 having oestrogen mimicking ingredients. Instead seek out products that are made from 100% natural ingredients. For instance, aromatherapy businesses often make up their own skin care products which are natural and wonderful for the skin.

6) Ultimately, you may have to refuse to allow your daughter to wear makeup and skin care products until her body has stopped developing. As she is most vulnerable when her body is developing, taking such a stand may protect her from breast cancer in the long run.

The pressure being brought to bear on cosmetic companies is slowly forcing them to withdraw these chemicals from their product lines. However, it will be some time before it is safe to use shop-bought products. In the meantime, we must protect our daughters from being exposed unnecessarily to products which may cause them harm later in life. Some exposures to chemicals are out of our control but limiting our children's exposure to shop-bought products is one thing we can, and must, control, to ensure their future.

Handling Teen Stress is Simple

Stress is the response of the body and the mind towards various changes in the physical environment of a person. Though a human being undergoes changes throughout his life, adolescence is one period that witnesses most of the changes. During adolescence, an individual goes through numerous types of changes including physical, emotional, social and academic. Teenage is the period that is accompanied by maximum stress levels.

During puberty, there are various factors which lead to tension and stress. A few common stress factors are expectations from family and teachers. Sometimes, self expectation could make it hard for you to choose an appropriate career for yourself. Some other factors that could lead to stress are poor economic condition, estranged parents, disability, troubled relationships or lack of self esteem.

Stress if not handled effectively by teenagers can cause various health related issues. Some of the common health related problems that can arise as a result of stress include anxiousness, inability to concentrate, sleep and eat properly, depression and several others. If a person suffering from stress is dealing with any of these symptoms, one must look for professional help immediately. Many teenagers often tend to become violent and also withdraw socially, owing to stress. The inability to cope up with stress can also cause some teenagers to commit suicide.

Thus, proper stress management is very important during teenage. Time management is one of the best ways to manage teenage stress. Proper time management would help you have enough time for various activities like your studies, sports, friends or other house hold chores.

Dividing your overall tasks into smaller tasks that can be easily completed is another way to combat stress. When organizing your tasks, only concentrate on activities that you have control over. Pondering on things that are beyond your control will only drain your energy and make you stressed.

Eating a healthy diet coupled with exercise can also help deal with stress. You should also reduce your caffeine intake. Alcohol and drugs attribute to stress so take care you stay away from them.

Certain situations can be the cause of a stress attack in certain teenagers. It becomes important to confront such situations in order to deal with stress. Practice situations that you fear such as public speaking and the like. You should also learn to be more expressive. If you find it difficult to express your emotions to people, you can express your emotions through writing or music.

Do not indulge in negative thoughts- replace the negative self-talk about yourself by positive or neutral thoughts. "My life has become worse forever" can get replaced by "I am in the dumps right now, but things are not going to be the same forever if I seek help".

Accepting yourself the way you are is an example of the key rules to control stress in puberty. Most teenagers suffer from an inferiority complicated and become the victims of stress. Getting over this complicated and self acceptance will help you deal with stress.

However, if regular methods of anxiety control fail to help then to find guidance from a health is the best choice available. Remember, to be not influenced by what others say or feel about you. Being yourself is the only way to gain confidence and fight with teenage stress.

Handling Peer Pressure in Teenagers

Peer Pressure on a teenager can be either positive or negative.

The positive pressure should be encouraged while the negative pressure must be discouraged and totally prevented.

The positive pressure occurs when your teenager is attracted to the right set of crowd. This means, the teenagers group of friends are those that have focus and are right thinking.

How do you get these set of youngsters? Chemistry says 'like minds attract'. Encourage your teenager to attend church or religious group meetings that encourage focus and ensures that he is always with a positively minded group.

Do not discourage his/her friends from visiting!

Knowing the type of friends your teenager associates with helps you to understand the kind of pressure he/she may be subjected to.

This last term of high school has been the most challenging. The sense of belonging that can be obtained from joining friends to participate in such things as Sexual escapades, Illegal Partying, Drugs and Alcohol imbibing, Carrying Firearms and Knives, Wearing Fashionable (sometimes exposing and hip styled) Dresses. The list of bad habits can be endless!

I have been forced as a result of these various types of pressures to discuss issues would ordinarily consider 'not for teenage ears'! This ensures that I can pass a positive opinion and in a conducive atmosphere ensure that the opinion is well received and will help my teenager to withstand unnecessary pressure.

Meeting out punishment can sometimes help to bring your teenager back to track, but most of the time puts their back up! My teenager tells me 'you should be able to know what I can do! how long will it take you to understand me?

Most of the time I shout right back that, with experience, she will get to know that parents are most likely right! Realistically, when I calm down, I relate experiences of other's who have fallen victim of similar circumstances and their results (sometimes unpleasant or fatal). This has helped to bring my teenager back to line.

Good Hygiene For School Age Kids

It is during the school age when children tend to catch the most viruses and infections. These are usually spread from other children through hand contact, sneezing and sharing foods. If a child attends day care or preschool, chances are that they will begin to catch cold and germs even sooner.

While there is some good in catching cold and allowing the body to fight off infection, thus strengthening the immune system, there are some school age problems that you want to avoid. Colds are one thing, but other diseases and conditions that are rampant in elementary school as well as daycare. One way that you can avoid some of these common, but very troubling conditions, is to teach your children to practice good hygiene at school as well as home.

The daycare or learning center where you send your child should also be well versed when it comes to good hygiene for kids. Parents should be aware of the fact that no matter how hard the school tries to keep the preschool germ free, germs will appear. It is important that the child care center inform parents of any type of germ that is making the rounds.

Lice, impetigo and strep throat are all health conditions that run in schools and should be avoided. Lice is a common condition in schools where there are young children and parents should learn how to look for nits in the hair. Impetigo is a staph infection that usually is the result of a child that rubs his or her nose with the back of their hand and can be spread by hand to hand contact.

Strep throat is a bacterial infection of the throat and needs antibiotics to be cured. The fever that accompanies strep throat is called scarlet fever. The daycare or school will usually send out notices to parents if there are any cases of these conditions in the school.

Parents can make sure that their children practice good hygiene at home, wash their hands frequently - especially after using the bathroom or eating, and also avoid sharing foods with other children. Children should be taught not to sneeze or cough without covering their mouths. Children who are sick should be kept home from school.

Parents should work with the day care or preschool so that both can do their part when it comes to helping children practice good hygiene. When good hygiene for school age kids is practiced at an early age, it becomes a habit in adulthood that can also ward off other illnesses, such as influenza and other contagious illnesses.
